This hole, called Kola Superdeep Borehole, was started in 1970 by Russian scientists. To challenge the American scientists, they wanted to dig as deep as possible. Scientists had reached 12 km depth after 19 consecutive years of digging, but then something happened that they had to stop the excavation.
What happened after all?
According to research, as the scientist dug deep into the ground, the temperature of his machine started increasing rapidly. The machines stopped working when they reached a depth of 12262 meters (40,230 ft). At that time the ground temperature was 180 degrees Celsius. Seeing this, work stopped immediately. Scientists then named this hole Door to Hell.
0.2% excavation from the surface
– Digging 12 kilometers in the ground is not less than any wonder in itself, but you will be surprised to know that it is not even 0.2% of the depth from the surface to the core of the earth. According to Scientist, the earth is 6400 kilometers down, where it cannot be thought of reaching.
Digging from this machine
Uralmash, the world’s most unique machine, was used to accomplish this unique task. This machine with a multi-layer drilling cyst had a target depth of 15000 m (49000 ft).
