Thanet

Thanet is a District? of Kent in the United Kingdom of Great Britain. It has an active blogging collective made up of a mix of homour, politics and news with a touch of business thrown in. Most bloggers from Thanet use Google's blogger.com service much to the annoyance of those that don't.

Issues such as the Turner Centre, Thanet District Council? and Sandy Ezikiel's ability to say stupid things to the press are mixed with regular articles of error spotting in the local "news" paper, photography and general friendliness.

Given that Thanet is one of the poorest areas of the UK it does quite well for blogs.

Local Reactions to Westwood Cross

I stated in "Local Reactions To..." that I wanted to try to summarise the feelings of "us lot in Thanet" towards some key issues. Towards that end I have selected Westwood Cross as the first topic because I am aware that there is a reasonable body of expression on the subject already. I want to give a somewhat balanced coverage offering space to each view proportionate to the number of people, papers, surveys, polls, blogs etc (sources) expressing that view. So while I gather the evidence of

Sunny Sunday on Ramsgate Beach

Can any one tell me why Ramsgate beach was empty today?  One could count the number of people on the sand this afternoon.  One could, but I didn?t.  I couldn?t believe how empty it was.  I went down there a few weeks ago on a similar beautiful Sunday afternoon - that time I thought perhaps the lack of people was due to the Big air Event going on in Margate.  Just a thought but does the lack of car parking have anything to do with it?

Free car parking in Margate

Thank goodness. I think I have commented myself on previous occasions that £1.30 per hour for the privilege of Parking in Margate does not make sense. Similarly the park parking charges in Northdown Road, Cliftonville and in Ramsgate town centre should be addressed. Check links to my previous blogs  - local to Thanet - in right hand collumn. For more about local car parking read the blog and comments here: http://bignewsmargate.blogspot.com/2008/06/its-start-for-margate.html

A Bit Of Politics

As regular readers will know, I rarely make any serious political comments here, except to take the proverbial out of our local Jurassic junta on occasion. It's probably because, as the only Lib Dem in the village, there never really appears to be any point. However, with Cllr Moores' 'popular but beseiged' Tory Thanet Life blog comatose, the chances of me being labelled a 'paedophile', 'welfare sponger', 'living gloating metaphor of all that's wrong with society', or a 'left wing c*nt' just for

It?s not just the bloggers

Last evening I went a hilarious, but at the same time depressing, meeting entitled ?Margate United?. I think it had been called to have a pop at the current councillors but as none of them were there, it was rather unclear what it was all for, except to provide a soap box for a few ill-informed bods who needed to blame someone else for their own sad lives. The funny thing was that it was clear that genuine differences of opinion were pretty minor! There was nothing to argue about! All agreed t

The Kent Invent

In the light of Ken Clarke?s English Pauses for English Clauses and Malcolm Rifkind?s East Lothian Answer, I thought I would reflect on some other Conservative plans that would try and answer the West Lothian Question. This time the proposal comes from Roger Gale, a Conservative MP for North Thanet in Kent. As both Ken Clarke?s and Malcolm Rifkind proposals have memorable names, I feel I should give Roger Gale?s proposal such a name too. Judging by its hitherto unfavourable reception I thi

Margate police

I have to share this with you. It made me chuckle but also made me despair. I was in the new police reception the other day (although I?ve no idea what was wrong with the old one) and saw a sign featuring some big nob Kent plod. Next to his smiling photo was a statement which surely can?t be based upon any statistical jiggery pokery known to mankind. ?The Thanet district is a safe place - together we can keep it that way and improve the quality of life for everyone.? Sandy Beach Deemed Unfit For Purpose

Nope, not another story about dirty nappies strewn across Viking Bay (eeurgh!), but the result of my latest 7 day poll asking whether people would prefer to see the back or front of our glorious council leader. A whopping 63 people cast their votes, here's the final tally: Question: Is our Sandy fit to be leader of Thanet Council? No: 87% (55 votes) Yes: 12% (8 votes) An overwhelming majority in favour of putting the former pugilist and 'f*cking tosser' utterer out to pasture, then. I expect

Policeman Killed by Train

Details are still sketchy but it seems that yesterday a 43 year old copper has managed to off himself in a fairly newsworthy manor. The as-yet-unnamed officer was not on duty when he and the 9.59am train from Ramsgate to London Victoria met at the crossing between Herne Bay and Birchington. While the train was damaged in the crash no one else is thought to have been hurt. Passengers did, however, suffer a three hour wait in the train before finally being moved to a replacement bus service. Wh

Fairtrade Fair Trade For Water Week?

Yet more evidence, if it were needed, of the low priority placed on the Millionaires' Playground by our Margate based Jurassic junta. My spies tell me both the council chairman and our glorious leader, Sandy Beach, have booked themselves in for a Fairtrade bunfight at the Winter Gardens on the same night they're meant to be attending a gala dinner as the culmination of Ramsgate's Water Skiing Week next month. I presume the chance to rub shoulders with my old TV chum George Alagiah, who'll be at

Breeding Your Own Killer

the house flyThis is a fly. One of many types of fly that you are likely to see this summer. This summer we are likely to see a lot more of our friend the common housefly as well as his better dressed brethren - the blowfly family. Blow-flies (also frequently spelled blow flies or blowflies) are members of the family Calliphoridae of flies (Diptera). Some members of this family are known as bluebottles, clusterflies or greenbottles. Flies in this family are often metallic in appearance and be

Margate car parking more expensive than Central London

Up to nine times more expensive! One of the great mysteries to me as an observer of local issues, is our local Tory Council, they seem extremely hostile to local retail business, which is particularly apparent when you look at local parking policy. Now I personally have a theory that in the same way, we read in the winter that network rail encounter the wrong sort of leaves, I reckon we have the wrong sort of Tories, having read that the borough of Westminster, controlled I believe by Tories,
